All these factors tend to increase the wind speed recorded at a coast station so that wind reports from these locations will generally give a higher wind speed than may exist in the open sea – possibly as much as 10 knots higher, although this may not always be the case. 19 WHEN THE WIND IS OFF THE LAND When the wind is flowing from land to sea, you can expect good sea conditions when you are running close to the land because the fetch is small with the land providing good shelter. The distance offshore in which you can expect to find these slight sea conditions will depend on the strength of the wind, with a strong wind starting to generate rough seas within 3km (2 miles) or so of the coast. If you stick close inshore, you can expect to find the moderate sea conditions that are fine for a powerboat, but in a sailboat you might experience a variety of unexpected wind conditions.
