Working for Barnum was prof-itable, but tragedy would strike. Twice. The museum caught fire while Swan was there, and it burned to the ground. Firemen heroically broke through a wall and used a crane to lower her to safety. The giantess lost all her possessions. Barnum opened a second museum, which was also destroyed in a fire while Swan was there. After this, she left Barnum and returned home to Nova Scotia. A year later, in 1869, Swan rejoined the showman for a tour of the United States. Fate finally brought the giants together during her travels.
In the 1870s, Barnum brought his wondrous marvels on the road with his circus and created a sensation. The show was on the side of the main circus tent and entertained guests before the circus began. The big top was soon the main venue for such "side" shows. At the time, there were already more than thirty circuses in America. The concept of the midway was perfected at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, held in honor of the 400th anniversary of Columbus’s discovery of America (it ran a year late).
The giant worked with Barnum through the mid-1880s. As with many giants, Chang’s height was probably exaggerated. An 1883 New York Journal article entitled "How Giants Are Made" featured a fellow giant, Colonel Ruth Goshen, stating that "Chang, the Chinese monstrosity, has a mouth that could not be enlarged without danger to his ears. " Of course, Goshen may have been exaggerating as well; after all, Chang was competition. Regardless of Chang’s true height, he was living as large as his appearance, enjoying wealth, renown, smarts, and even romance.
